Hexham Bin Collection Guide | Recycling, Waste & Tip Times

Bin day in Hexham depends entirely on your exact address — collection rounds are organised street by street across the county, so there's no single town-wide calendar that applies to everyone. Here's how the system works, plus the official tool to find your own collection days.

Check Your Own Collection Day

Because collection days vary by street (and can even differ between neighbouring streets), the only reliable way to get your dates is to check by postcode. Northumberland County Council's official postcode checker will show your exact collection calendar, including any bank holiday changes.

How the System Works

  • General waste and recycling are both collected fortnightly, on alternating weeks
  • Bins must be out at the kerbside, ready for collection, by 7 am on your collection day
  • If your bin isn't out in time, it will be collected on your next scheduled day — a fortnight later
  • Recycling must go in loose, clean and dry — not bagged
  • Garden waste collection is a separate, optional paid subscription (see below)

What Goes in Each Bin

Bin Accepts
General waste (black/grey) Non-recyclable household waste, e.g. food waste, plastic wrappers, trays, yoghurt pots, crisp packets, paper towels
Recycling Paper, card and cardboard, food and drinks tins/cans, aerosol cans, plastic bottles only
Garden waste (subscription only) Grass cuttings, shrubs, leaves, weeds, flowers and plants, hedge clippings, prunings, small branches

Non-bottle plastics (bags, cling film, plant pots, yoghurt pots, food trays, margarine cartons, bubble wrap) are not accepted in the recycling bin under the current scheme — these go in general waste, or can be taken to a Household Waste Recovery Centre for separate recycling where accepted.

Garden Waste Collection Service

Garden waste collection is optional and paid for by annual subscription:

  • Costs £59 for the year
  • Provides 20 collections between March and November
  • No collections take place between December and February
  • Check your eligibility and sign up through the council's garden waste page — not all properties are eligible

Bank Holidays and Christmas

Collections are usually shifted by a day or more around bank holidays, including Christmas and New Year. The council publishes updated schedules ahead of each holiday period — always check the postcode checker or the council's alerts page in the days beforehand rather than assuming your usual day still applies.

Missed a Collection?

Before reporting a missed bin, check that:

  • Your bin was out by 7 am on the correct day
  • There wasn't a service disruption already flagged on the council's alerts page
  • No red or white tag was left on your bin flagging incorrect items in your recycling

If all of that checks out, you can report a missed collection directly to the council, and they will usually collect it as soon as possible.

Hexham's Household Waste Recovery Centre (Tip)

Hexham's tip is located at French Garden Industrial Estate, Hexham, NE46 4JU. It's open daily from 8 am to 6 pm (closed only on Christmas Day and New Year's Day). You'll need to bring proof of Northumberland residency, and you'll need a permit if you're bringing DIY waste or using a van, trailer, or large vehicle.

Contact and Further Help

  • Northumberland County Council waste team: 0345 600 6400
  • Report a missed collection, request a repair, or apply for assisted collection via the council's bins and recycling pages
  • If you're elderly, disabled or unable to move your bin yourself with no one able to help, you may be eligible for an assisted collection — apply through the council

Bin schedules and charges can change, so if anything above doesn't match what you're seeing on your own collection calendar, the postcode checker is always the most current source—spotted something that's changed? Let us know,, and we'll update it.
